SPAM(something posing as meat) museum..Amish Farm Tour

June 25Th/28Th
Arrived at Spring Grove, Mn. at the Park Hidden Bluff....2 1/2 miles of gravel road down in the holler. Started out with rain in the morning but cleared up for the rest of the travel. Friday we went into Austin, Mn. with picnic in hand to the Spam Company, couldn't tour the process so we went to the museum, Hawaii consumes the most Spam in all the states. It is produced in Mn. and Ne. also in Guam, Philippines, Japan and South Korea, found a city park and had lunch it is hot and muggy.
Saturday we went to Lanesboro, Mn. bought a CD on the Amish back road tour. We took our time could stop at different homes if they had their shingles hanging out to sell their wares. Made about 7 stops some of those people are very poor the little ones don't speak English they just open the door to the little craft house and let you in.. Its self service, the kids were all barefoot from the age of 4 to 17 even the girls ,the boys all have bowl haircuts, bib pants and homemade shirts (not t-shirts) and the girls wore their dresses, bonnets and no shoes. The boys would come running when they saw the truck but would not get close to you or the truck. They made a lots of baskets (yes, I just had to have one), lots of furniture, canning jellies (bought Dandelion Jelly), cherry pie, strawberry/rhubarb jam, bread, candy, cabbage, and asparagus. Their quilts started from $600. to $900., they are big and beautiful. Saw lots of buggies( those People just fascinate me) The tour took us about 3 hours. the Guy on the CD gave us check points and told us about the Amish Settlement. We went to their cemetery the had stone are all the same with their name, date of birth, date of death, who their parents were and how many days they had lived. There was lots of still born babies and several young girls. We were wondering if they died in child birth.

Ravenna,Ohio

June 16Th
Spent one night here.....Hot and Muggy....took longer than we thought..the GPS told us to go east I said the town is West....had Jay go west...well needless to say when we got to town the park was 15 miles east......the ole boy was right. So I told Jay we would follow him from now on. They don't have city limits........Pa. has townships....NY has village.....Ohio has town limits....and Everything is a Camper
Going thru Florida has big tulip trees, Ga. and Carolina's they have Honeysuckle along the highways....smells wonderful , in Va. they have dogwoods big and beautiful, and in the IL. and Wis. they have tiger Lillie's growing along the highways.

Spent one night in Van Wert, Ohio at the Fairgrounds.

Niagara Falls........Lockport, NY

June 12Th/15Th
Stayed about 12 miles from Niagara Falls, big park with no Sewer, lots of cotton woods in bloom and what a mess the pond with covered it look like snow, went to Niagara Falls on US and Canada side to see what was there. It is beautiful, bought tickets for the boat ride with "Maid of the Mist" took the ride to the bottom of the falls, all you could see was mist. Niagara Falls is made up of American Falls, Bridal Veil Falls and the Horseshoe Falls, on the boat they give you a plastic bag with a hood...so you can stay dry.....Ya right. We did the Wind of the Caves...they give you a plastic bag with a hood and a pair of Sandals, you go down in the elevator to almost the water level, then you walk down some stairs to the water, walk up the stairs in the water where the falls are coming over the stairs. Didn't go to the Hurricane Deck you are really in the falls definitely getting soaked.
Took the trolley around town, did the view point from the Horseshoe Falls, the water is 3-5 Ft. deep but runs about 30 miles an hour, not a good place to be. You could See the power plant from the view point. Sunday went back to Canada to the Botanical gardens, Butterfly conservatory is an enclosed room in the shape of a cocoon you can go in they will land on you some times there is Butterflies from all over the world. Beautiful in color . We went to the floral clock this is huge lots of plants the Flowers were just starting to bloom. Took a buggy ride around the Botanical gardens 250 acres which took about 45 mins. there is different bushes and trees from different parts of the world it is maintained by college students plus they experiment with different plants . you have to have 80- 90 % grade level , write an essay and have 2 years of horticulture to qualify . They have 10 students working the grounds and there is 100 % graduation. The kids have to pay for this schooling..they do get living quarters.

Besides the factory, it is set up like Disneyland....lots of rides to make old people sick wanted to go thru the factory, but like everything else health dept. stepped in no more. They do have a electric tram you get on , it takes you around ,tells you about the cocoa bean how it is processed, dried, crushed, extracting the cocoa for the chocolate. Went to the Museum on Mr. Hershey. It was free in the parking lot if you only stayed 2 hours....2-5 hours is $10.00...5 hours and up $30.00. We did not go to the amusement park. We took a day headed for Bird in hand, Intercourse (What dummy had this great idea) yes, that is the name of a town in fact its an Amish town, went to Stasburg had lunch they serve family style dined with a couple from Pa. had a nice visit he has a clown car that he goes to different functions. We had a couple days of rain.

Dixie Caverns, Salem, Va.

May 28th
Just spent the night...was going to stay in Radford, Va. but the park was next to the river and it was rising fast it was nothing but mud.
